Air Quality Information for SPPS Families

White SPPS logo on blue background

Late last week, the Minnesota Department of Health issued new guidance for schools around air quality.

SPPS recognizes the need to balance student safety with the need for physical activity. SPPS will follow this new guidance from the MN Department of Health and will cancel all outdoor activities when the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches the “Unhealthy” red range. At lower air quality levels, Building Administrators may use their judgment to determine if their schools' outdoor activities should be moved inside.

For students with asthma who have pre-exercise medication available with a current healthcare provider order, health staff will make plans to pre-medicate students before going outside. When asthma is well-managed and well-controlled, students should be able to participate fully in all activities. Health staff will monitor students and will address concerns with families as needed.

Please visit and enter your school's zip code to find the current AQI. More information and resources may be found at the Minnesota Department of Health.
