Program Description

Through a partnership with Saint Paul College, the Medical Careers program at Humboldt High School provides students with an opportunity to explore courses related to health care.   This enables them to gain a strong foundation in healthcare knowledge before they go on to pursue a higher degree.

Currently, the courses available are:

  • Healthcare Careers
  • Medical Terminology
  • Nursing Assistant

Upon successful completion of their course, students may earn articulated credit or concurrent credit at Saint Paul College.   These courses may then be used towards healthcare degrees such as nursing, medical laboratory technology, emergency medicine, etc.

Course Descriptions:

Healthcare Careers

This course is meant to be an introduction to healthcare.  Through this course, students learn about the history of healthcare, infection control techniques, safety in the workplace, the opioid epidemic, and medical ethics.  Students also get a chance to sample different medical careers, such as:  cytology, radiography (X-Rays), therapy (speech, occupational, physical), nursing, emergency medicine, optometry, audiology, and genetic counseling.  Students will then do in-depth research on a medical career of their choice.

Medical Terminology

Through this course, students learn the language of healthcare.  By studying the prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms, students will be able to understand medical language.  Students will learn how to spell, build, and pronounce medical terms correctly.  This class is offered as concurrent credit through Saint Paul College and students can apply this class towards many healthcare degrees.
