Students read You Don't Know Me second quarter
At Humboldt, students in the 9th grade are focused on the theme "Crossroads." Students spent the first quarter reading short stories such as "Rules of the Game" by Amy Tan, "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe, and "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst. As they evaluated the stories, they asked questions such as "what influences a person's decisions?" Students also learned Costa's Levels of Questions and how to use MLA documentation.

Second quarter, 9th grade English students continued thinking about crossroads as they read a novel by David Klass called You Don't Know Me. While reading, students considered ideas such as what it means to really know someone and asked questions about how well others know them. As they read, students continued to use Costa's Levels of Questions and MLA documentation, as well as how to evaluate a novel using questioning, comments, predicting, and connecting to their own life. In the end, students used the themes of the novel to participate in a Socratic Seminar.

Third quarter, students are preparing for the writing test while becoming familiar with Greek/Roman mythology and the archetypal hero. Guiding questions include: What is a hero? What is an archetype? What is the purpose of myth? Students are learning the names of Greek and Roman characters in mythology, applying the archetypal model to heroic characters, and reading various myth looking for a purpose. Students will also practice expository writing.

Fourth quarter, we will wrap up the year with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
